How to preserve your flowers

If you have recently purchased or you have received a bouquet as a gift, the first thing you should do is take it out of its packaging and place it in a vase. If the arrangement is from a professional florist, the stems will have been cut at the right angle to enhance their appearance and prevent them from drinking too much water.

Before you put the flowers in a vase, cut the stems at a 45-degree angle with a sharp knife. Avoid using scissors, which can damage the stems. Also, remove any lower leaves that may be submerged in water. This will help to prevent a build-up of bacteria which can cause your bouquet to wilt.

Most of us fill our vases with water straight from the tap, but lukewarm water is preferable for flowers. If your bouquet has many buds, it may benefit from being placed in warm water for a minute and then in cold water for 15 minutes before returning it to lukewarm water to encourage blooming. Also you should try to keep your water as clean and clear as possible on a regular basis. We suggest changing the water every couple of days to slow the wilting process.

Flower food will be provided with most deliveries as this can provide necessary nutrients to maintain the freshness of the bouquet. You can also add a teaspoon of sugar with four drops of bleach or a copper coin to the water. The bleach or coin will stop any build-up of bacteria while the sugar will act as additional food.

If you are don’t want to display the flowers immediately, place them in the refrigerator to keep them looking fresh. This is a trick commonly used by florists to maintain the flowers’ pristine appearance for longer period.
